The Windows 11 Factor (Important in 2026)
Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Windows 10 PCs no longer receive regular security updates unless they are enrolled in Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates programme, which runs until October 2027 for consumers.
Windows 11 officially needs a newer processor, generally Intel 8th generation or newer or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer, plus TPM 2.0. That makes the processor generation the most important thing to check on a used laptop:
- Intel 8th gen or newer (e.g. EliteBook 840 G5/G6 and later): a good choice for Windows 11.
- Intel 6th–7th gen (e.g. Latitude E7470, EliteBook 840 G3/G4): cheaper, but not officially supported by Windows 11. Only buy one if the lower price is worth that trade-off.
How to Check a Used Laptop Before Buying
- Processor and generation: look at the model number, e.g. Core i5-8365U is 8th gen.
- Storage: it should have an SSD (256GB minimum, 512GB preferred), not only a hard drive.
- RAM: 8GB minimum. Ask whether it has a free slot for upgrading to 16GB.
- Battery health: on Windows, open Command Prompt and type
powercfg /batteryreport. Compare “Full Charge Capacity” with “Design Capacity”. The closer they are, the healthier the battery. - Screen: check for dead pixels, bright spots and scratches on a plain white and a plain black background.
